Maintaining Your Sewer

Consider the following scenario. You walk down your basement stairs carrying an empty basket. You are doing laundry and intend to move the load from the washing machine to the dryer. You reach the bottom of the stairs and take the last step. Your feet are suddenly wet and you realize your basement has flooded. You immediately call a plumbing service and wait for the technician to arrive. When the plumber gets there he tells you your main sewer line is blocked and a drain cleaning must be performed to open it up. He sets up his tools and gets the sewer machine in place and begins to snake the drain. After some time and a bit of struggling he breaks the news to you... Your sewer line is broken and must be replaced.

Tree roots have grown into your sewer and have caused so much damage that it cannot be cleared. Now not only are you left with a still flooded basement and a mess to clean up, but you now have no choice but to spend thousands of dollars to excavate and replace your sewer line. What a nightmare.

While this is a completely hypothetical scenario, for many this has become a reality. It is not an easy nor favorable position to be in, however, it is preventable. Odds are if your home was built prior to thirty years ago, the way your sewer was designed and put into place has left it highly vulnerable to invasion by tree roots. The roots grow into the sewer, usually at the joint where two pieces of pipe or a fitting meet and continue to grow, damaging the pipe as they do. However, if you stop these roots before they intrude and embed themselves too deeply in your sewer, damage can be prevented. The best way to do so is to perform routine maintenance drain cleanings yearly and cut those pesky roots out.

Don't let that tree damage your sewer and your wallet, call today and schedule an appointment for a maintenance cleaning!
